They just don’t want to get on that damn train or freeway or whatever it happens to be for an hour each way with a whole bunch of smelly people they don’t know and worry about it being on time and the stress that goes along with that. When I receive an initial request for a meeting, I use a meeting form and write down the information I need: who is requesting the meeting, what is the purpose of the meeting, where it will be held and a phone number or an e-mail address and dates that are available. Much easier than searching in Outlook and less stressful.

Using e-mail is a great tool, especially if you are trying to cut down on company costs via international phone calls and postage fees. Sure, there are times that e-mail is appropriate, such as when you need some sort of record from a client to fulfill their product order. At least you will have proof of it.
My former boss gave me an excellent reference on paper and by phone. One of the things they stressed was to hire well. If you do have to leave, dont forget to ask for a reference letter. A good reference can go a long way towards getting your next job. I read an interesting article on what management can do to prevent lay offs.

An interview can be as stressful on those conducting it as on the person being interviewed if the conversation does not flow. A firm but short handshake is all it takes. Humour is a powerful stress reliever if done in good taste, but timing is everything. Its not that Im funny, because Im not, but I find a lot of things funny. I opened the phone book and signed up with every single one in town. The amount of skill, pressure, stress, and problem solving differs at each of those levels. The kicker was, since the event was international, there was a timezone difference. Someone’s selfless time, attention, and care. Does that count?
