Perhaps you are already a 2nd or 3rd assistant to someone high profile and you want to run the office of your executive as you get promoted through the years. As you are job hunting, think hard about if you want to temp, freelance, do contract work, temp-to-hire, or direct hire roles only and under which circumstance.
I've heard of EAs who are promoted to Operations or Facilities roles later on in their careers but at this point, I am playing both roles. However, if you know how valued you are and what unique things you bring to the table, it does mean there may be some room for negotiating.
The staffing agent asked if I was open to temp to perm, even though the position was for a full time EA, he feels the CEO may need time to see if it is a good fit. I have no idea how long "temp" is considered before they would offer the permanent position. It feels like a bait and switch and there are no guarantees.
And as I was working, job hunting and/or temping, I had to find other sources of happiness. I also thought about money, salary negotiation, and how I was spending my time. This was mostly as a temp during very slow months when the entire industry was on vacation, but I’m sure the paycheck wasn’t as amazing as yours.
