I did do research however and read as many articles and books on the subject that I could and then I tackled the article and actually learned something while doing it. Writing on a subject you know nothing about is a good way to learn something about that particular topic. See, it wasnt that hard after all now was it?
I thought it would be helpful for those just entering the administrative field to know some of the things I have learned over the years. Some things I have on this list is a memory stick with the minute templates, tentcards, meals ordered, meeting packages, pen, notebook, highlighter, calculator (I hate math so just in case they ask something that requires mathematical skills) and attendance records to establish quorum for each meeting. It is interesting work.

Depending on how acronym happy your office is, it can be like learning a new language. I suppose we better get used to it as it seems to be a trend and start to learn the language of acronyms and initialisms. Just when I think I am starting to understand my new offices language they throw in a new one that I have never heard of before.
I have been on some interactive sites where assistants ask questions and get answers and I learn from them as I have some of the same questions. Lunch n learns are also a good way to learn from each other. Administrative newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post tips or suggestions is a good way to learn.
Be kind to your new hires and available to answer their questions and help them learn the ropes. But, having read what you just wrote, I realize that there is more hands-on that I must do before expecting a new hire to learn how to do the job. The first week on the job can be very overwhelming. I also learned at a "Working Smarter with Microsoft Outlook" seminar that we should not use e-mails as urgent requests. I also learned not to open e-mails first thing in the morning, but to clear up any urgencies, or open mail, etc. Anyway, it taught me to re-read, more than once if necessary, an e-mail that I think is negative.

I can honestly say that even though it was a hard time to go through, I ended up getting a much better job and a better opportunity and can look back on it as a good learning experience. Dont look back, just look forward to what new opportunities may come your way. If you do have to leave, dont forget to ask for a reference letter.
