Here are some tips as your career progresses that will affect how you jobhunt. The lower-level admin you are the more jobs there are. Those jobs support the President, CEO, CTO, CFO, and Chairman. Your jobhunt will take a lot longer. Jobhunt with focus. Make a decision.
And is there a point in expending so much energy in a life-long project that may not have any positive benefit? I'm temping. I have turned down the Fortune 75 companies because the two jobs weren't right for me. For some reason, the jobhunt doesn't bother me. The question I'm really asking is, "Do I need to blog?"
One of the unexpected surprises was that once my contract ended all the recruiters that I worked with said I did well and offered to help me with my jobhunt too! While your ultimate goal is FT job in admin, the only thing that will get you there is recent experience in admin - the good ol' fashioned catch-22.
Afterall, thousands of people want to be in the industry, but those that do make it, eat, live, and breathe their art - sometimes even unpaid because they forego their usual pay rate or collect their paycheck only if the project is successful. Be strategic about your transition and jobhunt and plan it well, even financially.
This means on your own initiative, ask to learn new software programs, volunteer for projects at work that will teach you something and challenge you, have interests outside of work that help your career in some sort of leadership, management, networking, or public speaking role. Almost every job has an admin element to it.
I started this blog while temping/jobhunting and I was allowed to write or do personal side projects as long as it was not interfering with my work. I will find a job that is near my house with hardly a commute. I will find a job with a boss that is humble and smart and a team that is friendly and kind.
