Here are some tips as your career progresses that will affect how you jobhunt. The lower-level admin you are the more jobs there are. Those jobs support the President, CEO, CTO, CFO, and Chairman. Your jobhunt will take a lot longer. Jobhunt with focus. Make a decision.
JH recently wrote me and asked the following question, "With so many temp agencies out there, I don't know which is/isn't good. I was wondering if you could give me the name of the temp agency you worked with. You ask a very good question and I'm so glad you are being proactive with your jobhunt and career.
One of the unexpected surprises was that once my contract ended all the recruiters that I worked with said I did well and offered to help me with my jobhunt too! My resume gets passed through 2 or 3 people or a hiring manager is doing a general search on LinkedIn or the job sites. So I'm covered at the central hub.
My question regards the difficulty I am having in reentering the admin support field despite the fact that I have ten years of office management and administrative support experience. There are some certification programs out there that, unfortunately, don’t teach you how to build partnership with your executive or how to manage your executive’s day; but our programs do. (JB). I have a BS in management and over 15 years work experience. It is admirable that you have your BS in management. I am excited.
State you’d love to be an EA and learn so much you can be promoted to coordinator, director, manager. And it’s not only important to state them to others, but for you yourself to live your life and to manage your career so you do 99% of the work and that 1% allows others to help you if they wish to get to you the next level.
More importantly, once you figure that out, it can help you MANAGE your feelings and perspective during the day whenever you get frustrated or every hour if needed. I started this blog while temping/jobhunting and I was allowed to write or do personal side projects as long as it was not interfering with my work.
In your case, she may have been able to influence the SVP, CEO, HR, or the other assistants because she is in charge of all admin and it’s her duty to manage them. And part of that is managing up - bringing things to their boss' attention and up the chain it goes. Bosses usually ask themselves themselves: How manageable is an employee?
I did very well on my interviews and it's down to me and one other EA who already has a full time job. The staffing agent asked if I was open to temp to perm, even though the position was for a full time EA, he feels the CEO may need time to see if it is a good fit. It feels like a bait and switch and there are no guarantees.
I knew I didn’t want to jobhunt for more than 6-9 months if I didn’t have to. And as I was working, jobhunting and/or temping, I had to find other sources of happiness. So I read a lot about happiness, jobhunting, and a meaningful life. I’m not sure how your jobhunting experience was.
Sign up with the major jobhunting sites with your resume and profile, join social network sites geared towards work, and meet with every temp agency in town just to be safe. Don't be an assistant to a Director or Manager if at all possible. If anything, they sometimes marvel at how long the assistant did manage to last.
