I am a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). As part of my membership I get a subscription to IAAP's magazine OfficePro and also to their e-newsletter OfficePro Express. Both of these are excellent sources of information for the administrative assistant.

I am guest posting on IAAP's Capital Chapter blog site so I wanted to say hello in case any visitors head over my way. I have been keeping in contact with the newly elected President in Washington (of IAAP that is) over the last year and she asked me to write a post on being a legal assistant.
As I was doing research for other articles on this blog I came across the International Association of Administrative Professionals' website ("IAAP") and was reminded of the advantages of being part of a professional organization. I was previously a member of IAAP when I was at another firm.

I just got my new issue of OfficePro (the IAAP magazine for office professionals) and it was a great read on the bus the last few mornings. If you are already a member of IAAP the magazine comes as part of your membership. There is an article on Organizational Churn, which is an article about going through changes in your organization.

But reader beware, this book has exercises for you to do so it requires a bit of work on your part and some thinking, but I couldn't put it down and have earmarked the book in so many places. I give this book a big 5 ++ for usefulness.
IAAP have an article on their website about how to work more effectively with an administrative assistant that I suggest would be a good start for a conversation with your boss. I would often tell her to quit apologizing every time she gave me work to do as she was my boss and I was there to assist her.
Recently on Facebook on the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) page they had a question on what would be the ideal gift from your boss or coworker on Admin Professionals Day. Not surprisingly, many of the comments, including mine, were in favour of a chance to go on paid professional development.
She currently serves as an officer of the Capital Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) in Washington, DC. At our local IAAP chapter dinner we heard a speaker from an etiquette protocol company Savoir-Faire and she suggested that it was very important to go to the office party because it was more about protocol and networking and how you are viewed as a team player than socializing.

I was at a recent IAAP Chapter meeting and we were discussing best practices for organizing our Inboxes and there were a lot of good ideas. I have mentioned it a few times that when my desk is cluttered then I feel cluttered. I like to put everything in its place so I will find it easily. The bottom line is to keep it simple.
We aren't in the same office anymore, but we now meet monthly to go to our local chapter's IAAP dinner meeting and then spend the drive home catching up on what each of us is up to. And the same for another person I worked with. When I was younger I became good friends with someone I worked with and then I became their boss.

I am a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) and each time I meet with this group of professionals I come away appreciating more and more how much each of us knows and how qualified we are in our careers. We each have our expertise, let’s share the wealth of information with our fellow admins.
I shared at a recent IAAP dinner meeting my reasons for joining this professional association and one of the reasons I gave were the mentoring opportunities. I felt that since I had been an admin assistant for almost 30 years I probably had something I could pass along that would be useful. In that sense I am mentoring via the blog.
The other night I went to a fundraising event that IAAP [1] were participating in for our local childrens' hospital called Trees of Hope. IAAP's tree was decorated with things like CDs, pens, large paperclips. Christmas is around the corner! Some of our chapter members were busy decorating a tree. There was a group singing carols.
Below are some things that I have found helpful to build my network: Join a professional association such as the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). IAAP is a group of assistants who get together and encourage each other in our jobs and careers. Read professional magazines when you get the opportunity.
