2) Be a stress-buster Your stress level is directly correlated to the boss’s stress level. But you can put a plan in place that will reduce your boss’ stress and, therefore, your own. Your boss will see you are saving her time and see you as a stress-reducer. Your calm demeanor will lower everyone’s stress level.
The people leader role can also be stressful. Burnout is a state of physical, mental or emotional exhaustion caused by long-term exposure to stress. Burnout also negatively impacts your health. Aim high, but never sacrifice your health or personal life to get there. Put your health first. Set boundaries.
Be careful what you say in stressful situations. I work in a call center and sometimes the stress of the job alone is enough to keep you on the edge. If you want to reduce the stress associated with the holiday season, get an early start on holiday planning. Then December comes along and your stress level is higher than a mountain climber hanging off a cliff by his fingertips. To reduce holiday stress this year, create a holiday checklist to make the season go smoothly.
In their book, Listen Up : How To Improve Relationships, Reduce Stress , Barker and Watson say that trying to top the other person’s story is one of those irritating habits that interferes with our ability to listen well. The fellow with the peg leg says to the other, “That’s nothing, let me tell you how I got this.”
Emotional blocks – boredom, daydreaming, stress, guilt, anger and frustration reduce concentration. When you enjoy what you are doing, it reduces stress. When stress is reduced, you work more efficiently. Switching and floundering – lack of concentration and focus on one job. Use priority lists to focus attention.
Don’t let the stresses of life control you. If you’re not eating properly, or your muscles are tight from too much time in one position, or your stress level is rising, your productivity will decrease. Take a 10 minute nap or a short walk to relieve stress. You need to take control of your life. Take a break.
However, many people run around stressed because they’re saying yes to everybody but themselves. Even if we can use this word with our spouse and children, we still have a hard time saying it to other people. It’s important to learn how and when to say no. I’m not saying that you should be selfish and never help anybody out.
Work on difficult jobs first, or at a time when you’re at peak performance, saving the less stressful tasks for when you have less energy.
