We share war stories over happy hours, at backyard barbecues and sometimes via an international phone call if need be. We would go to long lunches, she wouldn’t question if I left early, and would share office-gossip that I knew was unprofessional. By now most of us have encountered that boss. Lacking Leadership.
Co-workers can be dragons when they: gossip. Avoid gossiping. It is your thought process and attitude that controls your internal dragon. Maybe you cannot control how much you work or what kind of work is given to you, but you can establish the priorities, the manner or format, and how you organize it. Avoid complaining.
That internal dialogue that each person generates while trying to sort out what they’re observing and how they feel about it, multiplied across the organization, is what creates the underlying dynamics of a company culture. Secretaries make coffee, administrative professionals procure international resources to motivate and empower staff. The goal is to fit into what exists already and understand your role in the organization/seniority. It’s best not to gossip or form secret alliances.
