Last weekend, the keyboard lights went out. The ALT works the same way as the ALT key on your computer keyboard. It makes the alternate numbers and characters on the keyboard available. As you can imagine, I couldn’t use the keyboard at night. Read on, you may find a surprise. I was a bit frustrated. Time will tell.

I enjoyed having a full QWERTY keyboard without all of the keys, in such compact form factor. That meant it had to replace my notebook computer on many fronts, such as provide an alternate path to social networking, email, note-taking, Google Apps, music, video, and some tangentially interesting games.

I also have not set up any of my 8 email accounts on the DROID (again, I am moving slowly). KEYBOARD: I always wanted a physical keyboard. But I like it a lot better than losing all my display to a virtual keyboard (which you still have on DROID, if you want it). Here are the key points of comparison 1. DROID has it.

I have some clients whose friending policy is to accept all connection requests. In this case, it makes no difference whether they accept them with their own keyboard clicks, or whether I do so for them. This is no different than the pre-email days, when most correspondence was hard copy.

The only thing I noticed was some lag when typing an email. You see, I use my phone heavily for email. What’s worse is that as the keyboard is getting more use, it’s not as sensitive. I see the same lag switching in and out of the Calendaring application as I do for emails. It worked great there.

In other words, I wanted to be able to access my email, calendar, tasks, and notes from anywhere. They include Better Keyboard, Math Works, Brain Genius, DroidLive, Pandora, Movies, Where!, Google Apps did everything except Tasks. That’s it for now. There are a lot more apps that I’ve downloaded and I’m test-driving.

Typing addresses is easy with both the on-screen and the slide-out keyboard. What I Like So Far With that said, there’s still a lot I like about the device. I love the fact that I have a full browser. I love the zoom as well as full-page view capabilities too. As much as I find issues with the applications, I love the Android Market.

It would be much easier to keyboard it but I know it wouldn’t have the same effect as writing it by hand. I do feel much more comfortable with a keyboard than hand though. As for hand-writing versus keyboard, I too am much faster when using the latter, but for me, that’s not the point. I get hand cramps!

Now, when I say ‘don’t write’, I don’t mean you should take a break or get away from the keyboard for a day. I’m a pretty fast typist but it made me realise how unnatural it is to use a keyboard, or even a pen. That’s just common sense, and you should already be taking frequent breaks.
