Not all people who plan meetings are “meeting planners,” nor do all meeting planners start out their careers as meeting planners. I for one, started out on a clerical/administrative path with absolutely no knowledge at the time that a career in meeting planning even existed (and at the time it probably didn’t).

Obtaining funds from work to complete training in the current environment is difficult. Yes, Outlook Training and Training in Supporting a University Committee. To be effective in any position you need to be on the forefront of technology and systems use so I have attended many training courses for software and technology.

Administrative Assistants have a list of things they specialize in including business writing, proofreading, minute taking, meeting planning, travel agent, desktop publishing, editing, public relations and client liaison to name a few. Our jobs are not limited to just being a “secretary”.

Many times the administrative assistant position is a good way into an organization and what a great training ground to know an organizations inner workings than in this profession. I think many university students are seeing the value in having this kind of training. So much is expected of executives these days.
