The sweetest victory is the one that’s most difficult. The one that requires you to reach down deep inside, to fight with everything you’ve got, to be willing to leave everything out there on the battlefield—without knowing, until that do-or-die moment, if your heroic effort will be enough. Society doesn’t reward defeat, and you won’t find many failures documented in history books.
I was reading some reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally old posts and articles I’d written; many of them more than a decade old. I was surprised by how evergreen many of them are, and especially this one, so although it’s more than a decade old, I wanted to share it. I’ll share it as originally written, and share new thoughts at the end. February 9, 2010.

The article lists the usual financial reasons for working in retirement. But more interesting is their description of some of the non-financial reasons. Key quote: Ninety-six percent of over-65 workers reported that an enjoyable job is essential or important to living a fulfilling life.

A group of washing machines rattles loudly in test mode, only somewhat drowned out by the bass thumping from a hi-fi system an employee is checking. None of these products work properly, and that’s the point. .

I was embedded with Army National Guard soldiers as they hiked across hilly terrain in Arkansas, and they were going so fast I had to stop and go back to the start/finish line to wait for them to return. It was the first and, so far, last time I bailed on an assignment because I was physically incapable of completing it. It was a long assignment, and the hike was only a small part of it, so I still got the story.
