'Negotiating a job title change can be a scary prospect. It can be particularly daunting for those in the administrative sector who feel that they are not taken seriously in their chosen field. In the past I have asked to have my job title changed to accurately reflect the work I do only to be told that it doesn’t really matter what title I have and actually I get paid really well for what I do so why change things.

'We've been involved in several recent studies that show the importance networks play for freelancers and other independent workers (independent consultants, contractors, self-employed, etc.). The chart below is from the Freelancers Union report How to Live the Freelance Life. It shows how freelancers turn to their network to find work, collaborate on projects, meet new people and stay on top of their industry. Most of this was not a surprise to us.

I’m afraid mid-year review season is back in town or otherwise know as the time when you have to dust off your objectives from the start of the year and have a look at how you have been getting on for the last 6 months. Talking to your manager about your progress and job performance can be quite nerve racking (although I do know some people that love reviews, but they are also the type that love job interviews…) so it is well worth being prepared.
