This is a question I get quite frequently in my monthly “Ask the Career Coach” sessions. It’s not surprising; people who are in the midst of a job search are always anxious. They want the process to be much faster than it (usually) is. The longer it takes to land that new gig, the more self-doubt starts to creep in. So, at what point should you start to worry?
If you use Google Chrome as your browser, then I am sure that you are aware of all of the brilliant extensions you can download to help with pretty much anything that you need to do on the world wide web. I use Chrome all the time and have a whole suite of extensions that […].
It’s COOL to be an Administrative Professional because you have a pulse on how people feel. It seems that most people in a workplace confide in administrative professionals. How many times have your executive’s direct reports talked to you in confidence? Or how many just talk to you about how they feel about a project — or changes taking place in the company?
The title of this post is a quote from the NY Times article Sorry, Power-Lunchers. This Restaurant Is a Co-Working Space Now. The article covers Spacious , a startup that transforms unused space - especially restaurants outside of meal times - into shared workspaces. Key quote: "Everything is now a co-working space, one of those shared offices that are popular among freelancers, small companies and other workers who want a change of scenery. Coffee shops are co-wor
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Growth and expansion is important in any business, but it is especially true for small business who might only just be starting out in their industry. It’s important to hit the ground running and lay strong foundations in the market for your business to build upon going forward. There’s a whole lot that goes into growing as a business, however, so it’s important to find ways to make this process as smooth as possible.
Meeting someone you never thought you would have the opportunity to meet is an awesome feeling. Back in 2016, Engel Jones asked me to come on his show #12MinuteConvos. He lives in the Caribbean and at that time I thought he’d be another “internet friend” that I’d never meet face-to-face. Then, Engel and his wife, Amanda, decided to do something extraordinary.
This month, here in the U.S., we celebrate Independence Day. Technically, the fourth of July commemorates our founding fathers’ declaration of freedom from British rule. But practically speaking, it’s just an excuse to barbecue and watch fireworks. In the spirit of the holiday, I’ve been thinking a lot about independence and how it relates to work. When it comes to professional development, we often focus on things like teamwork and collaboration.

Starting a new Assistant role can be a pretty nerve-wracking experience. We have to form productive working relationships pretty quickly, build rapport, learn new systems and hit the ground running within a few weeks (if we are lucky!). Many organisations that I worked in assumed I knew what I was doing from day one, which […].
Scheduling a performance evaluation meeting and setting measurable goals can be stressful or even seem unproductive to some. The meeting is typically a way to evaluate the past year’s project management, acknowledge achievements, receive valuable feedback for performance improvement and create new goals for continued productivity. A performance evaluation is more than a method to measure outcomes for a company though, it’s also an opportunity to discuss professional and personal development oppo
One of findings that most surprised us when we first started researching independent workers was how many think independent work is more secure than traditional jobs. Back in 2011 when we first starting asking about this in surveys, we assumed the vast majority of independent workers would view self-employment as being less secure than having a traditional job. But as the chart below shows (the data is from the MBO Partners State of Independence study series ), we were wrong.
With the July 4 th holiday tomorrow here in the U.S. it only seemed fitting that I pen a post about independence. Specifically, independence as it relates to your business. And yes, I know I’ve written about it before, but it’s a subject worth repeating. If your business is coming between your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness keep reading. It’s time to claim your business independence.

I hate meetings. Long or short, large or small, food or no food, outside or inside, morning or afternoon — it doesn’t matter. Meetings drain the life out me, and I’m guessing most of you feel the same. There’s even a book called, Meetings Suck by Cameron Herold. Unfortunately, meetings often resort to nothing more […].
With the spoken word, we have the privilege of adding voice intonation, hand gestures, and emotion with our vocal cords. That doesn’t happen as easily in writing. You might leave readers guessing about your intended meaning and risk setting a tone that can be misconstrued. Does your writing come across as arrogant? Are you using pompous phrases? To avoid confusion, consider dropping the following idioms and phrases from your writing altogether.

Bankrate recently released a survey showing that 37% of Americans have some sort of side job. The survey was of adult Americans , of which there are about 250 million. This means the survey found about 92 million Americans have side hustles. We don't have access to the survey questions, so we' don't know how they defined "side job" But it must have been a broad definition to get to 92 million. That the question was broad is backed up by the study chart be
At this point, you should know that using social media to grow your business and/or brand is a smart move. There is a reason that just about every business guru out there recommends it. It works. Well, it works if you know what to do and are ready to do it. Too often I see misguided businesses and organizations create a social media profile, page or account that might as well be collecting dust.
David Allen joins me on this episode of the podcast to dive deeper into the Getting Things Done methodology. Some of the highlights of this episode include: How much of a role he had in writing the new book, Getting Things Done for Teens.

Much of the spoken language slides into our writing, but at times the words we say aren’t the exact fit for what we mean. Check your intention every time! Consider these sentences from an article about education: How many principals do what they feel will win approval? The public feels certain people shouldn’t be teaching. Given the context, is “feel” the correct word to express the author’s meaning?
The report The Rise of the Expert Economy is a interesting look at what it calls a "little-known, high-growth sector, made up of networks that connect experts with companies that need them." The firms in this sector, such as GLG (Gerson Lehrman Group), Guidepoint and Third Bridge, are surprising large. GLG, for example, has 1500 employees across 22 offices and has revenues in excess of $500 million.
On YouTube I’m constantly being bombarded with ads for Wix. In their videos they make creating a website look so simple. It’s not just Wix either, there are plenty of other website builders who crow about how easy it is to create DIY websites. But is it? Really? It depends on your expectations. Is a unique website important to you? All of the DIY websites that I’m talking about rely heavily on pre-made templates.

Acquiring a customer is hard work. No matter what field you happen to be in, every new customer is cause for celebration. Of course, picking up a new customer is only the first half of the equation. Just as importantly, you need to be able to retain that customer moving forward. A big part of customer retention is delivering quality goods and services at a fair price.

Bloomberg's Inside Google's Shadow Workforce covers the use by Google of what they call TVCs, or “temps, vendors and contractors" According to the article about half of Google's workforce is comprised of TVCs. The article caused quite a stir on social media with many people expressing surprise at the numbers, especially the fact that Google is using so many TVCs. But the growing use of non-employee labor by large corporations (and small ones too) has been an o
I recently found myself looking for a show to binge-watch while editing videos. I don't watch TV much, but for some reason, I was just in the mood for some background noise. I came across a reality show, SoCosmo; it looked interesting, so why not? I was planning to focus on my work and not the show. That plan lasted all of three minutes. I certainly did not expect to watch the entire season, much less to be inspired to write this blog.
