Virtual Moxie

I’ve talked, at different points in time, about how certain business behaviors can put you on—and keep you on—a gerbil wheel in constant motion. They don’t say that, exactly, but I'm not sure whatever other message a person can take away from things like: 1.

Twitter is a Broadcast Medium

Small Business Labs

Interesting academic study on Twitter from Yahoo Research.  The bottom line of the study is Twitter is dominated by a small number of users and much more of broadcast medium than a social network. Key quote from the study: “We find a striking concentration of attention on Twitter—roughly 50% of tweets consumed are generated by just 20K elite users—where the media produces the most information, but celebrities are the most followed.”.

How to Have Better Judgment at Work (or How I Almost Lost My Job and $10,000 In One Day and What I Learned)

Eat Your Career

While working at a bank many years ago, I approved a $10,000 fraudulent transaction. When the FBI showed me pictures of the man who had pulled a fast one on me, I didn’t even recognize him. In fact, the whole situation was kind of a blur. At some point, they pulled the footage from the branch security cameras and, as I flipped through photos of myself smiling and giving what appeared to be excellent customer service to a man on the FBI’s watch list, I could hardly believe my naivety.

Controlling the Woulda - Coulda - Shouldas and Overwhelm

" I'm so stupid!  Why didn't I think of that?  I have so much to do that I can't think straight! " Do you ever feel that way?  If you do, you are not alone.  Many people use negative "self talk" to justify why they are not getting the things done that they think they should.  You start in a state of overwhelm and rather than getting out of that state, you start traveling down a bad path.

Mind the Gap

And, while I brought back a lot of weird slang and an unusual faux accent (which thankfully disappeared quickly), the one British-ism I still refer to regularly is “Mind the Gap.”. You see, the London underground system (which they call the “tube”) has a looping announcement for passengers to “please mind the gap,” referring to the space between the train and the platform
