JH recently wrote me and asked the following question, "With so many temp agencies out there, I don't know which is/isn't good. I was wondering if you could give me the name of the temp agency you worked with. The best strategy is to sign up with every single temp agency in town. Thanks so much in advance!"
So bring your experience, wisdom, and people skills to the table, but have a “I’m green, hungry for the job, I’ll hustle” attitude as well. I mention how I worked for all my CEOs because I was recruited away as a temp. I wasn’t there to socialize or go out of my way to point out I was a temp to try to get a full-time job.
1) Focus your resume on your skills/talents vs the job title/chronology. You want to highlight how similar your skill set is to what they are seeking. 2) Temp while you look for a job so you can say you have executive or admin assistant experience and within entertainment. Call every single temping agency in town.
Google for the UTA list and sign up for all email lists and job boards for the entertainment industry, network with people you know, send your resume and coverletter snail mail to every company you want to work at to the attn of the recruiting department, and establish an online presence so headhunters find you via LinkedIn and job sites.
Despite this, I get the feeling that convincing employers of my suitability for an executive assistant job is not going to be an easy task - in a competitive job market, employers don't want to hear about skills as much as they want to hear about experience in the field. 1) Do you have the admin skills to be an EA? Below this, add short segments listing your skills and abilities, then your professional experience for the past 10 years, then your education and accolades, limiting the entire resume to no more than two pages total. Hiring brains will die past that point, regardless of how awesome your experience is.
3) Work with temping and recruiting agencies – all of them When you are looking for a job, contact every temp and recruiting agency in town. Send your coverletter and resume to a specific person, their general email address, or fill out their online form/application. Did the receptionist throw it away?
