It’s not unheard of that while a CEO is about to retire they start looking about 2-5 years prior to their exit. Look for a job CONFIDENTIALLY. State that on your resume, in your cover letter, over the phone, and don’t tell anyone at work. I agree that is a very long time. Explain it in the same manner.
