It would be interesting to see how many companies would allow for this type of dress code, since quite a lot of places have client visits on a regular basis. I work in a back office environment, where 99% of our client interaction is via the phone, e-mail or outside of the office, so I can wear jeans and a t-shirt.

That makes sense, but can this system be applied to other information, like monthly bills, tax returns, staff, legal issues, normal company information? B eing able to retrieve the data is more important than an organized alphabetized file drawer. I remember going to a walk-in clinic (doctors office) for an ailment at the time.

Then there are times when I am bored out of my mind and start either asking others for work or updating the company database. Theres just 8 hours in a work day (give or take, depending your work environment) and you can only do so much. There are times when people come up to me and expect things to be done right away.

So why do companies continue to do it? Fax Blasts I remember someone from my IAAP Chapter asked me to fax the notice of our Chapter dinner to a list of about 60 companies to promote it. To me this shows me the company has not done their homework on updating their contacts and are not considering the environment.

Ive been in offices where loud music is acceptable with people shouting over cubicles at each other, which was perfectly acceptable - it made the environment vibrant and fosters team unity. Its up to the individual to analyze this culture in addition to the individual relationships around them.

My current boss always refers to me as his colleague, both to those within our company and to external contacts when referring them to me. My former "boss", who has since left our company, referred to me as his partner.

We do have to keep our company privacy in mind when sharing and never give specific details, but it is easy to give a general work situation and no one is the wiser as to who it is about and no company secrets are shared. The problem that sometimes occurs with sharing with current co-workers is it can turn into office gossip.
