Contribute as much as you can afford to a retirement plan. Very often the boards and committees of nonprofits are made up of wealthy, successful people. Get a mentor. Among the wealthy, 93 percent who had a mentor attributed their success to that person. You should never lose money on your savings. Set goals, not wishes.

Associations exist for almost every position and every industry. Join a committee or run for a leadership position. If you’re a young professional, you don’t necessarily want to spend your time volunteering with retired folks. My fellow mentors are all amazing people who share my values and have similar personal goals.
