My suitcase was packed, my traveling clothes all laid out. There, we’d spend the holidays together, as a family, without the overgifting and overdecorating and overeating of a typical Christmas. My dad has always enjoyed days spent swimming in the ocean, followed by hearty dinners at nice restaurants. Back to the beach.

Happily, I was one of the first people he called when he got engaged to his girlfriend on holiday, and helping them plan their wedding felt like the perfect natural end to my job with him. I helped her choose outfits for big nights and select and then book restaurants for cosy dinner dates.

It may be a nice coat, a nice meal out – one that is obviously a little too expensive, or even wanting to go on a holiday to be pampered. You should go on a holiday that will pamper you. So work out, buy the makeup you like, buy the clothes that you like. You should be able to go to a restaurant by yourself.

At any decent hotel you can find a DIY washing facility so you don’t need to carry any extra clothing in your luggage. But I still think I need to be covered with clothes for at least 2 days. Last week I was having a fabulous holiday in New York to celebrate my Mum’s 60th birthday. We ate at an Italian restaurant called Il Violino on Columbus Avenue which was very nice, although we did have a slight run in with the waiter who thought we had not tipped enough, despite it being 20% of the bill! Raging Bull!
