My suitcase was packed, my traveling clothes all laid out. This trip was part birthday gift, part Christmas escape, part Florida homecoming. My dad has always enjoyed days spent swimming in the ocean, followed by hearty dinners at nice restaurants. When my dad went out to get the paper, he nearly slipped on the icy sidewalk.

I’m working on taking time off for visits, but in the meantime I’ll reconnect the old-fashioned way by writing, sending cards throughout the year; little gifts the family might enjoy, too. I often think I need new clothes, but when I clean out or organize my closet, I realize I have lots of options and everything I need at my fingertips.

If we pop into Home Depot to pick up a gallon of paint, she checks to see what other hardware items we might need, saving a second trip. Account information. Bills to pay.

My initial thought (months out) was that I would take my time and pack over several weekends; meaning just pulling some clothes here and there or shoes and beach attire so I wouldn’t be rushed at the last minute. After you have pulled all your clothes and shoes, put back 25% of it. A little souvenir or gift goes a long way.).

Lunch that she has to schedule – A lunch out with the team is the typical way of showing appreciation but you completely nix any respect or appreciation when you ask your assistant to call the restaurant and make the reservation for everyone. Part of the gift would be you doing the legwork to make that lunch happen.
