If you are a new hire, take the time to learn and ask questions. The first months on the job are a learning and growing experience. Take advantage of this time to learn as much as you can and ask, ask, ask. I always feel more confident when a new hire asks me a question and gets all the information before proceeding.

Some e-mails are useful, but I don’t always have time to deal with them right away. Don’t worry, these e-mails do not get lost or are completely out of sight. Share what you have learned with your boss. This has been a great way to clear up a lot of unnecessary e-mails at work. It will be worth the effort.

I have been on some interactive sites where assistants ask questions and get answers and I learn from them as I have some of the same questions. Lunch n learns are also a good way to learn from each other. Administrative newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post tips or suggestions is a good way to learn.

One person who uses this system all the time couldn't figure out why I didn't know that purple on her private appointment meant she was out of the office -- huh! Use that feature to set reminders (which everyone uses it for anyway). Another one I never use.

Be sure to include call-back windows if you leave a message so you won’t be interrupted while working on an important task.
