At this inflection point, Frank considered law school while answering phones for the Latin American division of Travelers Insurance. Subsequently, he temped as an illustrator for a big ad agency, where he learned early versions of Flash and code-based animation. They’d misheard his birth name as José. No problem.
JH recently wrote me and asked the following question, "With so many tempagencies out there, I don't know which is/isn't good. I was wondering if you could give me the name of the tempagency you worked with. The best strategy is to sign up with every single tempagency in town. Thanks so much in advance!"
1) Do try the tempagencies. When on a temp job, work as if you are on probation all the time. Don't text or be on a cell phone while in the waiting room. When you go for an interview you have to keep in mind that they really do want to hire someone, but you have to make it worth their while to hire you.
I temped here and there for a year. Finally, I got a job interview through the tempagency for a one-year contract. I finally got a phone call to say they wanted to hire me and could I start in a few weeks? I had worked for a lawyer while living in Northern Alberta and knew I didn’t want to do that again.
This quickly led into a change of career and I became a recruitment consultant working for high street agencies. A move to London happened around 1996 and my first role as a PA for the Director of Human Resources for a recruitment agency. A fabulous role which I loved. I joined NHS Wales in 2005 and have been here ever since.
After only 2 weeks, I found a great company through a staffing agency and the position was full time working for a wonderful CEO. The staffing agent asked if I was open to temp to perm, even though the position was for a full time EA, he feels the CEO may need time to see if it is a good fit. How long do you think is fair?
I've found every single one of my jobs through a tempingagency. How I Got My Job with a Chairman/CEO I moved to Los Angeles to look for a job in the industry and because I had zero connections, I learned through informational interviews that I should apply to the tempagencies.
It consists of former bosses, co-workers, friends at work and in my personal life, friends of friends, professional network groups I'm a part of, anyone through my volunteering activities, tempagencies, and people I'm a client to as well - my former personal trainer, my photographer, etc.
Initially, I did receive a few responses, asking me to provide video-pre-screens [not my favorite thing to do, I'm discovering] or to participate in phone pre-screens, which I giddily did, with zero results. I have also participated in several fruitful phone screens, and I have an onsite interview scheduled in the coming days.
It was for catered food at a place that did not take payments over the phone with a credit card. Sometimes companies don’t validate for parking especially if you are doing testing at a tempagency and are there for a few hours. Whenever you interview for a job, there’s at least 2-3 interviews if not more.
3) Work with temping and recruiting agencies – all of them When you are looking for a job, contact every temp and recruiting agency in town. Sure, some of them might have the same jobs, but you will soon find that sometimes a company will only work with one specific agency. Job hunting is a numbers and timing game.

Tell us your story on how you went from temping in LA to being the EA of high-profile CEOs. I found every single one of my jobs through a tempingagency or by referral. I learned through informational interviews that I should apply to tempagencies. So I left that temp gig and went to work for the CEO.
