Traditionally, many companies have relied on temporary staffing for executive assistants or opted for a temp-to-perm approach when hiring a permanent executive assistant, when in reality, there are many advantages that make a permanent executive assistant a better choice from the start.
I was out of work, temping here and there for a year. Being a member is not only a great place for networking, but for mentoring and learning of jobs in your area. Don’t underestimate the value of temping. Working for a tempagency can either land you a full-time job or help to keep you employed while you are looking.
After only 2 weeks, I found a great company through a staffing agency and the position was full time working for a wonderful CEO. The staffing agent asked if I was open to temp to perm, even though the position was for a full time EA, he feels the CEO may need time to see if it is a good fit. What did they learn?

The great thing about the job is I learned what it's like to be on the other side. Even if it's just learning a new software program, a new office phone, the corporate culture of a company, or how other departments interact with mine, I try to learn and grow and gain something!
The flip side is to try to get a job directly as a writer’s assistant, at a talent agency as an EA/script reader, or be an assistant to a creative executive (Executive Producer, Producer, etc) or the story department. Since you have already worked at a well known company, you are half way there.
The shortest route is to look for temp work thru agencies or TaskRabbit, Craiglist, or volunteer. Learn to answer why being an EA appeals to you more than any other job. Your best bet is to get some experience in admin and being an EA thru temping or other contract work. Network 2-3 degrees out for opportunities.
One of the most surprising things for me was to learn that not all companies will give you an expense account or a company credit card. Sometimes companies don’t validate for parking especially if you are doing testing at a tempagency and are there for a few hours. Have enough credit.
State you’d love to be an EA and learn so much you can be promoted to coordinator, director, manager. Even when a company is downsizing or merging, there’s a lot of opportunity for contract roles or temp gigs to help them thru the transition. State in 5 or 10 years you’d like to be VP of a division. When you job hunt keep this in mind.
Whenever I meet people for coffee or a meal, I am always interested to learn about them as a person and their work. I love doing informationals because I like learning about what people do, even if I am not in that industry, and perhaps get an office tour down the line, and make a new friend if they introduce me to someone else.
