The best part is, there are a ton of temp agencies and anyone can apply. The #1 rule of temping is you're not supposed to ask for jobs or try to get employment on your own to honor the relationship and introduction your agent forged with the company you're at. Straight out of college, I joined the temp pool while I was jobhunting.
So be warned - often unfairly, the first job you take out of college becomes your specialty. After I was laid off I of course had to go look for another job. I was called in for an interview at an agency and it was the assistant that did all the vetting of the candidates. In hindsight, there was fault in my thinking.
The flip side is to try to get a job directly as a writer’s assistant, at a talent agency as an EA/script reader, or be an assistant to a creative executive (Executive Producer, Producer, etc) or the story department. Even though I am an EA with over 15 years of experience at the C-level, it seems that all the recruiting agencies I have approached still require an applicant to come in for an appointment to take their basic employment testing, and then only seem to be able to offer lower-level administrative jobs.
After only 2 weeks, I found a great company through a staffing agency and the position was full time working for a wonderful CEO. I did very well on my interviews and it's down to me and one other EA who already has a full time job. Because I knew nothing about the job except my title (EA) and the dept (I think it was in marketing).
