In a recent interview, I was asked, “What motivates you to be an AdministrativeProfessional Trainer and Coach”? And therefore, I am writing today – International Women’s Day (IWD). I would like to “celebrate, support and collaborate with other women” in honor of International Women’s Day. Sunday, March 8.
This coming AdministrativeProfessionals Day I want to challenge you when it comes to thinking about a gift. If you truly value your administrative assistant, I want to challenge you to think beyond flowers and lunch. Why not step up your game and show your assistant you truly value him or her as your administrative partner?

I read professional magazines, books about topics that I want to be educated on, website articles related to my career and the list can go on. Educating yourself doesn't have to cost big bucks or take time away from your family to attend courses. You can read during your commute to work, read before bed or during your lunch break.
The good thing about on-line courses, is anyone can do it from anywhere. When it gets closer to the course date and it doesnt look like they will fill the seats, they offer the course at a cheaper price. They can slot you into courses, either online or live classrooms that are happening tomorrow or later on.

When you are trying to create change, whether in a process or for the administrative community in your organization, it is much easier to be persuasive when there is a group. When administrativeprofessionals work together, there is less duplication, resulting in savings to the company and increased profitability.
Of course, that’s not to say that a degree isn’t valuable! For example, PACE is a certification for administrativeprofessionals provided by ASAP. In addition to a tracking tool, you may also want to create a file on your internal or external hard drive (or cloud storage system) for professional development.
For instance, I have folders for the Board of Directors, International, Personal and one for Work Information. Of course what works for me will probably not apply to you so you need to set up folders that apply to your working situation, but the fewer the better. Makes my life simpler. But what about the other stuff? Feels much better.

Take a course, if you already know the basics, go to the next tier and learn at the intermediate and expert levels. Try the International Association of AdministrativeProfessionals (IAAP); this organization also has certification opportunities that are great resume enhancements. Get the knowledge you need. Get involved.
We really dont have an excuse because it is becoming increasingly easy to take courses online. I have had great experiences learning online in interactive courses. Many administrativeprofessionals are still hesitant to experiment with automation and AI tools. It simply means that you can work more efficiently and course-correct more quickly when something needs to be adjusted – and it won’t be such a manual, clunky process to change the things that need changing.
Try to attend training courses that are offered for executive admin as much as you can (even if it is just one time a year and you travel to another city for it). I am a member of our local chamber’s young professional’s group – perhaps your chamber has some great mixers you can attend. Here are my thoughts.
