This was the spring of 2005. From there the trail hops back and forth over Slickrock Creek, which forms part of the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Here near the creek, though, at the base of the V formed by two hard mountains, I couldn’t gaze out at open water; I couldn’t fly through open sky.

In 2005 I was confident. By the end of Week 1, I notice a ritual beginning to form. I had just appeared on the Today show to promote my first nonfiction book, an account of how my life was transformed by sacrificing some little luxuries. For me, writing has to be ritualistic, like teeth brushing, exercise or walking the dog.
